About Us

Jesus-centered and gospel-focused, you’ve reached the Grace Cafe Journal, an extension of the Grace Cafe Podcast and home of Mike and Susan Adams, a former pastor and pastor’s wife who survived a crash and burn in 2009 from rules-based religion and into a renewed understanding of grace. What we bought before, we just can’t sell.

Like you, we’re on a journey, and one thing we’ve discovered along the way is that while there are many on similar journeys, we don’t all look the same, think the same, do the same things, or act the same way. The two of us are simple ragamuffins showing other ragamuffins where we found bread. That’s the beauty of Christ’s church. It has so many expressions.

We invite you to pull up a chair and your favorite beverage and explore our blog. For your convenience, we’ve made subscribing easy. We would love to hear from you! Just click the Contact Us link in the top bar. We hope you enjoy your stay.

Welcome to the Grace Café Journal!

  1. Hi Mike and Susan, I have followed your writing for some time now and really enjoy it. My wife and I also left the ‘system’ after nearly 50 years. Just wanted to tell you I have so much respect for you having been a pastor yet giving it up because you came to realize the system was wrong. Keep up the good work.

  2. Hi Mike,

I have read similar posts to your rethinking religion series on a few other sites and in books over the past 10 years or so. I think your approach is well thought out and many people should be able to clearly understand what you are saying. I read the Dones book you refer to in part one of the series. I left the institution after 35 years. Finding a community of believers that are like minded is difficult. Keep up the good work.

    • Thanks Larry. You’re right, it’s very difficult most of the time to find likeminded believers outside of the institution. I think that’s due in large part to the institution’s successful retraining of us that it’s the only valid expression of Jesus. We’re just not used to being apart from it. I feel your pain.
